Application Guidelines
Under the joint guidance and support of the CAS and APORS,
APROC supports scholars to study the fundamental theoretical problems
in the various disciplines of OR and related branches, as well as practical
projects which have direct impact to the developments of the national economy,
sciences and technologies. The center also supports interdisciplinary studies
and the studies for expanding new horizons of the knowledge, especially
encourages young scholars to open new directions and fields.
The center carries out the following research topics:
The Fundamental Theoretical Problems in OR
The study of the fundamental theoretical problems laies down a solid
foundation for OR development, and basic theories make up the main body of
the discipline. Therefore, the center supports and encourages following
topic studies.
- Linear and nonlinear programming, non-differentiable programming,
multi-objective programming, parametric programming, dynamic programming,
global optimizations, etc.
- Integer programming, graph and networks theory, scheduling and timetable
theory, matroid theory and its generalizations, etc.
- Stochastic optimization models, queuing theory, inventory control,
reliability theory, stochastic programming, simulations, decision theory,
game theory, search theory, etc.
The emphasis will be placed on developing practical algorithms, and
corresponding computer software, decomposition and approximate methods
of larger scale problems, computation complexity, stochastic approximations,
and interdisciplinary studies.
Important Practical Projects in the Areas of the National Economy
The real applications of OR brings about great economic and social benefits,
and at the same time they provide endless and never exhausted resources to
further development of theories. Therefore, the center encourages the study
of practical important projects.
- The study of optimization methods widely used in industry and agriculture,
and development of corresponding software.
- Major topics in economic field, such as investment decisions, allocation
problems, inventory and transportation, planning and developing projects
of area, project evaluations, risk analysis, traffic, communications,
energy, environment, ecology, resource utilization, etc.
Interdisciplines and New Growing Pointes of the Disciplines
The developments of inter-disciplines often yield unpredictable and
unimaginable impetus to sciences and technologies. The center will pay full
attentions to the development of inter-disciplines and new promising
directions in the disciplines, such as neural networks, artificial
intelligence, management information systems, decision support systems,
flexible manufacturing systems, mathematical theory of computer, resources
and environment, ecology problems, management science and behavior science,
information science and industry and so on.
Scholars of all over the world, especially from Asian-Pacific region,
are welcome to put forward their research proposals. Once an application
is approved, the applicant will be arranged a two weeks academic visiting
to the APROC. In addition, in order to promote the co-operations between
OR societies, the center will invite APORS council members to pay a two
weeks academic visiting during their three years term. For all visiting
researchers APORC will provide local expenses as well as all necessary
facilities for their work at the center.
Visiting researchers are encouraged to do joint researches with the
faculty members of the center. Each visiting researcher is expected to
deliver a research report within a year, list APROC in parallel with
his institution, and indicate the work is done during his visit to the
Asia-Pacific Operations Research Center in the footnote. After the paper
is published, he is expected to send three reprints to the center. Every
year the center will compile technical reports to exchange with other
related institutions.
Appendix: The Application Procedures
- The deadline of submission of applications is sept.30. The applicants
will be informed of acception or rejection by Nov.30. The research project
will be carried out in the next year.
- Applicants should fill out application forms (the center will send
copies to applicants upon request). For junior researchers, two
recommendation letters are required. A resume is expected.
